Still have no idea about Chinese traditional seal? Well this is the right page to visit!!
Chinese traditional seal is usually hand worked and used to mark as an official stamp for government daily paperwork, it usually stained with pigment before chopping; Chinese traditional seal is normally made of metal, wood, stone and jade.
Both official and private seals are known as “XI” before Qin Dynasty, and they are regulated to call “XI” for official used seal solely owned by emperor during Qin period. In Han Dynasty, some vassals and queen started using XI as well in calling their seals, and during Tang Dynasty of China, Queen Wu Zetian regulated the name of BAO instead due to the similar pronunciation between XI and SI (means die in Chinese). Hence both BAO and XI had been used to name official used seals in dynasties right after Tang, while for the unofficial name of the seals, there are plenty of choices, such as Yin Zhang, Zhu Ji, He Tong, Guan Fang, Tu Zhang and so on. Official seals are mostly the symbol of Power and Authority; well the unofficial ones are regularly used in Chinese painting/calligraphy and they are specifically popular during Tang and Song dynasty.
There are mainly four types of stone used to seal carving by folks of China, which will be illustrated in details for below section:
1, Shou Shan Stone, which is exploited 40 km north part of Fuzhou suburb region in Fu Jian Province, Shou shan stone was widely accepted for seal carving after Ming Dynasty. it is characterized by its clean quality as jade, and well known among carvers. Shoushan stone is now independent as a carving industry and being so much popular all over China.
2,Qing Tian stone was founded in a town called “Qing Tian”, which is located south-east region of Oujiang River in the Zhejiang Province. Qing Tian Stone is polished, colorful and easy-to-carve, and it is also widely accepted by carvers all through the ages. Some of their kinds are famous and expensive such as Deng Guang Dong, and only little quantity of them being collected by carvers.
3,Chang Hua stone is another one produced from Zhe Jiang Province, it is originally from a town used to named as Chang Hua. Chang hua stone is tenderly beautiful and suitable for carving fine ornaments, well only small part of chang hua stone has been penetrated for years by vermillion which finally become the most valuable and costful “Chicken Blood Stone”.
4,Ba Lin Stone, produced in the Inner Mongolia province, ranked as one of the four famous seal stone throughout Chinese seal carving history. Ba Lin stone is considered as one sort of pyrophyllite, it is nourishing clean, crystal clear and looks like the skin of baby. Well the “Chicken Blood” of Ba Lin stone has even better quality, which is usually called as the “Treasure of Grassland” and extremely suitable for Chinese traditional seal carving.
Other than the above four famous seal carving stone, those such as Qing Hai Stone, Zhe Jiang “Xiao Shan Red”, Liao Ning stone are all considered as good material when doing Chinese traditional seal carving.
